Last week, the cruise ship MSC Grandiosa faced an outbreak of diarrhea caused by norovirus – the same virus that, in the first days of the year, caused thousands of cases of viruses in cities in Baixada Santista.
According to the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), 127 cases were recorded among the 6,293 passengers on board, which is equivalent to more than 2% of the vessel’s total capacity.
The outbreak was identified as being caused by norovirus, an infectious agent known for its high rate of contagion, transmitted mainly through direct contact between people or contaminated surfaces.
Anvisa, in partnership with the Santos Health Department, began an investigation on board the ship, collecting samples from five crew members and carrying out tests to confirm the infectious agent. Food and water samples were also taken for analysis at the Adolfo Lutz Institute, in São Paulo.
MSC Cruises informed CNN that the vessel adopted “all necessary precautions to maintain a healthy environment on board”.
“We are closely monitoring reports of cases among guests and have increased cleaning and sanitation procedures throughout the ship. All guests were advised to wash their hands frequently and contact the Medical Center if they experience any gastrointestinal symptoms,” the company stated.
