LONDON (Reuters) – Next month’s MTV Europe Music Awards in Paris have been cancelled, organizers said on Thursday, citing “the volatility of world events” amid the ongoing conflict in Israel and Gaza.
The awards ceremony, in which artists such as Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Bad Bunny and Foo Fighters were among the nominees, would be held on November 5.
“Given the volatility of global events, we have decided not to move forward with the 2023 MTV EMAs out of an abundance of caution for the thousands of employees, crew members, artists, fans and partners who travel from all corners of the world to bring the show to life.” , a spokesperson said in a statement.
“The MTV EMAs is an annual celebration of global music. As we watch the devastating events in Israel and Gaza continue to unfold, this does not appear to be a time for global celebration. With thousands of lives already lost, this is a time of mourning. We look forward to hosting the MTV EMAs again in November 2024.”
Israel responded to the deadliest attack in its 75-year history by vowing to annihilate Hamas, placing the Gaza Strip’s entire 2.3 million population under total siege and bombarding the enclave in attacks that killed thousands of people and left more of a million homeless people.
France is on high alert following the October 13 murder of a teacher in an alleged Islamist attack.
On Wednesday, eight French airports were placed on security alert and several were evacuated for checks. The Palace of Versailles has been closed again due to the third security scare in five days.
