The kennel of the Military Fire Department of the State of Rio de Janeiro (CBMERJ) won, this week, 17 national search and rescue certifications.
The pairs, formed by dog and driver, were tested in rural and urban environments, in tests that evaluated agility, obedience, dexterity, independence, objectivity, endurance and nose. Currently, the CBMERJ pairs have a total of 42 national and international certifications.
The exams took place in Magé and Guapimirim, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, between December 4th and 8th. The animals acted in green areas, with dense vegetation, debris and collapsed structures, scenarios used to simulate relief operations for victims.
“The certificate attests that the animal has the necessary qualities to act in occurrences involving people lost in woods and forests; buried after landslides or in landslides following natural or man-made disasters,” said Lt. Col. Douglas Henaut.
The corporation’s kennel has 15 animals, 13 of which are fit for service and two are in training. While puppies, puppies begin a series of exercises, with motor and sensory stimuli, in order to awaken the skills needed to act in the rescue.
“The firefighters and the dogs in the kennel are among the most capable in the country and in the world. We are ready to serve the population of Rio de Janeiro with excellence and also assist in occurrences in other states, and even in other countries, if requested. In the field, the animals put into practice the skills acquired during the training, which takes place since the first months”, explained Colonel Leandro Monteiro, Secretary of State for Civil Defense and General Commander of the Fire Department.
In all, 20 dogs from five delegations participated in the Southeast stage of the National Certification of Search and Rescue Dogs by Ligabom (National Council of Military Fire Brigades of Brazil), hosted by the 2nd Group of Forest Relief and Environment (2nd GSFMA ). The duos from Rio de Janeiro, Amapá, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais and Sergipe performed the tests in the areas of aid and training.
