The international scenario has undergone profound transformations in recent years, marked by the weakening of multilateralism and the rise of unilateral policies. According to the general coordinator of the International Strategy Analysis Group on Defense, Security and Intelligence at the University of São Paulo (DSI-USP), Alberto Pfeifer Donald Trump’s return has a significant impact on global relations.
According to Pfeifer, today’s world is characterized by less order in international relations, with organizations such as the UN (United Nations), IMF (International Monetary Fund) and NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) losing relevance and effectiveness.
“Today, the world is the world’s most of the national state, the country, of unilateralism,” says the expert, noting that each nation seeks to establish its own agenda based on its intrinsic resources and power.
For Pfeifer, one of the most significant developments on the international board is the approach between Russia and China. He highlights the recent visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping, Moscow, “where economic, strategic and military ties between the two countries have been deepened.”
“At the same time, the United States, under Donald Trump’s leadership, have sought to strengthen relations with Middle Eastern countries, such as Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar,” he says.
The conflict between India and Pakistan is also mentioned as a turning point, with Pakistan emerging victorious thanks to the use of Chinese military equipment, the DSI coordinator evaluates. According to Pfeifer, this event establishes “a new paradigm in air combat”, demonstrating a Chinese technological advantage over the West.
Europe: the stunned actor
Amid these changes, the European Union is in a delicate position. Pfeifer notes that Europeans are “running out of letters that are thrown on the international board”, facing challenges such as the situation in Ukraine and the need to increase defense investments, especially with the reduction of US budget participation.
The expert concludes highlighting the complexity and dynamism of the current scenario, with new alliances forming and economic tensions between powers such as the United States and China cools. This “shuffle of letters” on the international board promises to continue bringing new challenges and opportunities to global actors in the coming years.
