Cargo trouserswork overalls, reporter vest. Let’s say that if one clue is not enough, three definitely prove it: fashion workwear it is increasingly a trend. But let’s think about it: what do these garments have in common and what has made them become the cult of the moment? Easy, le pockets. A detail that, retracing the history of the costume, we discover appears for a very specific and obvious reason: protect our values. But don’t imagine the pockets that we are used to seeing today, because when they were conceived they were detached from the head and had an independent life. In the beginning, in fact, they were more similar to what sachets are for us now or travel pouches: flat, in fabric or leather, to be worn around the neck or attached to the belt and hidden under coats and jackets. Only in 17th century they began to become part of the garment and to be sewn inside the clothes (of men but not of women).

How many types of pockets do we know? Many: from the welt ones, which reveal only a slit, to those with the flap that closes them, from the J-shaped ones, which take this name due to their characteristic curvature, to the applied ones, that is, sewn in such a way that the thickness remains outside the garment (that of cargo pants so to speak). In short, a pocket for every style.

Mechanic overalls: the more pockets, the better!

We had started last spring, or shortly before, to bring in the pants with pockets in our wardrobe and, within a few months, we found ourselves with a wardrobe worthy of an adventurous explorer. Mechanic trousers have replaced midi skirts and zip-up jumpsuits have replaced everyday clothes. The vests? They’re not just knitted or à la Me and Annienow (and next summer!) we want them full, full of multipurpose pockets, according to Miuccia (Prada) and Raf (Simmons).

Autumn wardrobe: 10 (shopping) moves are enough for a refresh of our style

From the cocoon cardigan to the tie, from the denim skirt to the sweatshirt: the right pieces are enough to update our look with the trends of the moment… And to start the new season off on the right foot

But how did it start? This switch? In our opinion it is a consequence of many factors, which we will review with you here:

  • the revival of the 2000s which, in recent seasons, has filled catwalks and the street style of references to the looks that were in vogue two decades (yes, 20 years have already passed) ago. Wide trousers, low-waisted and with side pockets: initially a niche trend, now approved for everyone but above all for all age groups.
  • fluid fashionor style genderless which no longer finds boundaries between masculine and feminine. Who said that to feel beautiful and sexy you have to wear a stretch mini dress and fishnet stockings? Now sensuality, especially for the new generations, seems to pass through the centimeters of skin left exposed among the cargo pants and the top xxs.
  • the consequences of lockdown: yes, fortunately it seems like a distant, very distant period but in reality it is a fairly close memory and, certainly, it also left consequences on the way we dress. We had started to rebel against bras, taking them off and rediscovered a new passion for comfortable and colorful tracksuits. Today, we love practical fashion.
  • A renewed feminism: What does this mean? That we have begun to abandon, shopping after shopping, that conventional wardrobe that we were used to and that society has always imposed on us as a model of “feminine style”. We didn’t do it first, our courageous suffragette ancestors already did it with strength and courage when they began to free themselves from corsets in the important fight for women’s rights and against gender inequalities.

And then… do we want to add comfort? This multi-pocket fashionor perhaps we should say multitasking, it allows us to have everything we need at hand and why not, even to go out every now and then without a bag. W therefore pockets, which today have invaded all items of clothing, from the most classic to the most unexpected.

The usual items, but worn in a completely new way? Discover the 10 coolest styling tricks of the moment

New ideas for experiencing (and dressing) fashion in a different way. Forgive the play on words, but it perfectly encapsulates the meaning of this article: discovering how to make the trends of the Autumn-Winter 2023/24 fashion shows our own. Maybe even with the clothes we already have in the wardrobe

Which item with pockets do you prefer? We have selected five, to have in your wardrobe.

1. The suit, emblem of workwear

A unique, practical, comfortable and functional piece. When we think of her, images of the most disparate jobs come to mind: from mechanic to carpenter to ice delivery, as in the archive photo we found which portrays a young woman in the 1930s intent on transporting frozen cubes in the cities. It has long become a fashionista and passepartout item, Sarah Burton had one on the catwalk for the Autumn-Winter 2023/24 collection by Alexander McQueen: in denim with tailored finishes and with a belt at the waist.

2. Cargo pants: back to the future

We have already spoken to you often about them in recent seasons because they are the perfect representation of the comeback of the 2000s style. They had an incredible success, so great as to be almost unexpected. Let’s think about it: who remembers more than skinny jeans Now? Everyone just wants the pocket pants.

3. The multitasking vest

It is the real star of the present, or rather of the near future: the vest full of pockets. We saw it on the next Spring-Summer 2024 catwalk Prada and we have all noticed it, asking ourselves: “will we then turn into urban explorers, photographers, reporters and fishermen?”, the answer is yes. Of course we won’t use it to carry the multipurpose knife, films or bait with us but we will have room for our cell phone, house keys, lipstick…

4. The aviator bomber jacket

In shiny satin or technical fabric: we always like it. We have always seen them plain, but today they are full of pockets, pockets and large pockets to contain all our secrets. Like this one, burgundy colored, that we saw from Blumarine: very cool.

5. The (mini) skirt with (maxi) pockets

Cargo fashion is not always unfeminine, just look at the miniskirt anymore hot (and sometimes shorter) of the moment: her pockets are practically as long as she is! The touch girlish to combine with a relaxed and comfortable look, decidedly unexpected, just like this one with leather details that we saw from Iceberg.
