Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today that his country would not respond to challenges in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine and would fight to establish peace through diplomacy.
Zelensky traveled to Germany to attend the Munich Security Conference as his country prepares for a possible military strike by Russia, which has amassed more than 100,000 troops near the Ukrainian border. Russia denies planning an attack.
“We are not responding to the challenges and we are fighting to consolidate peace exclusively through diplomacy,” the president wrote on his Instagram account, as broadcast by AMPE.
The Ukrainian president met with US Secretary of State Kamala Harris in Munich on Saturday and said his country was seeking “peace” after the United States said Russia could invade the country in the coming days.
Ukraine is prepared for all scenarios, Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said on Saturday when asked if he agreed with US President Biden’s assessment that Russian President Vladimir Putin had decided to invade, according to Reuters.
“We are preparing for any possible scenario,” Kuleba told the Munich Security Conference. The Ukrainian Foreign Minister also said that they will continue intensive diplomatic efforts to resolve the issue, after his meeting with Anthony Blinken.
Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko told Bild that “we take the words of the US President very seriously. Joe Biden is right when he says that Putin’s target is not Donbass, but the whole of Ukraine. Putin’s target is the capital.” , he stated.
In light of developments in eastern Ukraine, Klitschko has called for immediate sanctions. “We need a precautionary policy, not a response since the attack has already taken place. These sanctions should include the end of Nord Stream 2.”
