Thousands of residents of Rio Grande do Sul remain this Friday (19) without water, electricity or telephone signal. After the heavy rains that hit the state last Tuesday (16), the supply of essential services was seriously affected.
According to data gathered by the state's Secretariat for the Environment and Infrastructure, 97,364 points served by CEEE Equatorial, a concessionaire that serves a large part of Porto Alegre, the capital, remain without electricity this Friday (19).
In the interior cities and part of the metropolitan region of the capital, served by the RGE Sul concessionaires, there are 144 thousand points without power.
Some municipalities in the state are also without telephone and internet services, partially or completely. According to the operator Vivo, 23 cities are without access to the services offered by the company. As for the operator Tim, 12 locations that are served by the telephone company remain without the service.
The peaks of shortages in water, energy, telephone and internet services offered in the state occurred this past Wednesday (17), one day after the strong storm that hit the state.
On Wednesday (17), 1.314 million customers were without electricity for a few hours. There were around 781 thousand homes without water. Regarding telephone and internet connection services, 128 municipalities were disconnected on the same date.
According to a bulletin released by the government of Rio Grande do Sul, concessionaires and telephone companies are working to restore the services offered as soon as possible throughout the affected region.
Tuesday's storm
Heavy rains hit a large part of the state of Rio Grande do Sul on Tuesday night (16). One person died in the municipality of Cachoeirinha, metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, as a result of the rain.
According to the state's Civil Defense, 56 municipalities were affected and 153 people were left homeless.
The Military Fire Department (CBMRS) responded to more than 1,100 incidents related to the storm. Most of the incidents involved clearing roads and removing fallen trees. Around 50 people were also saved by the corporation.
This Friday (19), the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development recognized an emergency situation in the city of Porto Alegre due to the damage caused by the rains on Tuesday (16).
