The first shipment of doses of Pfizer’s children’s vaccine against Covid-19 arrived in Brazil in the early hours of this Thursday (13).
In the batch, which arrived at Viracopos International Airport, in Campinas (SP), there were 1.2 million vaccines that will be destined for the Brazilian government for distribution to states and municipalities, following the population criterion.
With the distribution forecast from the Ministry of Health, the municipalities have already started to organize the vaccination schedule for children between 5 and 11 years of age.

São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Goiânia and the Federal District should start vaccinating children on Monday (17). Porto Alegre will vaccinate children on Wednesday (19).
Some capitals reported that they depend on the Ministry of Health to start vaccination and set a schedule: Belo Horizonte, Manaus, Porto Velho, Vitória, Palmas, Cuiabá, Belém, Campo Grande, Boa Vista, São Luís, Recife, Curitiba, Florianópolis, Macapá, Aracaju and Salvador.
Rio Branco, Teresina, Natal, João Pessoa, Maceió and Fortaleza did not answer how they intend to vaccinate children.
Logistics and distribution
The city of São Paulo will start the vaccination campaign for children aged 5 to 11 years against Covid-19 on Monday (17).
The information was confirmed by the municipal secretary of Health Edson Aparecido to CNN.
“We still don’t know how many vaccines should arrive. [à capital], but whatever comes, we will use and vaccinate from Monday”, he said.
The Municipal Health Department of Rio de Janeiro plans to vaccinate, in a staggered way, 560 thousand children from January 17th.
The city hall of Belo Horizonte, through the Municipal Health Department, informs that it expects to receive the immunizers this Thursday. The forecast is to start vaccination after two days of receipt. There are about 193,000 children in these age groups in the capital of Minas Gerais.
The Health Department of Vitória follows the definition of the State. So far, the resolution with guidelines on childhood vaccination has not been published.
In Porto Alegre, the Municipal Health Department (SMS) will start immunizing children against the disease on Wednesday (19) — one year after the start of vaccination in adults.
SMS says that the first target audience with Pfizer’s pediatric vaccine will be children between 5 and 11 years old with comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma or permanent disabilities.
The Municipal Secretary of Health of Curitiba will follow the recommendation of the Ministry of Health for vaccination against Covid-19. It is estimated that 164,821 children in this age group are vaccinated.
The municipality awaits the arrival of immunizers intended for this public to start the call.
The government of the Federal District announced that the immunization is scheduled for Sunday (16) and will be done with the 16,300 doses of Pfizer that the DF should receive.
Goiânia will start the application of immunizations for this public later this month, from the sending of vaccines by the Ministry of Health, which is scheduled to arrive in the capital until January 17th. About 120,000 children are able to receive the first pediatric dose of the immunizer.
In Recife, a medical prescription will not be required at the time of immunization. Following the guidelines of the federal agency, vaccination will primarily cover children aged 5 to 11 years with comorbidities.
The health secretariat says that the municipality anticipated and, since August 2021, has opened registration in Conecta Recife for all people aged two years or older. So far, there are 41,227 children in this age group (5 to 11 years old) registered on the platform. According to an estimate by the Ministry of Health, based on the IBGE, the capital of Pernambuco has 159,558 children of that age.
In Manaus, the municipal secretary of Health, Shadia Fraxe, reported that the beginning of the campaign in the capital depends on the receipt of doses of the immunizer, which should arrive in the country on the 13th, for later distribution to states and municipalities.
The goal is to vaccinate 90% of the population aged 5 to 11 years residing in Manaus, which, according to the projection of the Ministry of Health, totals 260,721 children.
Belém awaits distribution from the Ministry of Health, but intends to vaccinate 141,642 children against Covid-19 in the capital.
