Museums in São Paulo have free access or one day free of charge per week

The city of São Paulo, the most important economic center in Brazil, is also known for its countless cultural, leisure and entertainment attractions. There are 101 museums, 282 movie theaters, 146 libraries, 182 theaters and around 40 cultural centers, according to data from the city hall.

In the case of museums, many have free admission on days that are open to visitors, and in others, there is always a free day.

Among the museums that are always free to access are Casa das Rosas, Casa Guilherme de Almeida, Memorial da América Latina, Memorial da Resistencia, Paço das Artes and Casa Mário de Andrade.

Saturday is the day on which the public has free admission to the Pinacoteca, the Museu da Imigração, the Museu de Arte Sacra and the Museu da Língua Portuguesa. Wednesday is the day to enter the Afro Brasil Museum for free. The Museum of Image and Sound has more days of free access, but at specific times: from Tuesday to Friday, at 10:00 am, at 10:30 am, at 11:00 am and at 11:30 am.

Those interested in visiting museums should consult the sanitary rules adopted at each institution because of the Covid-19 pandemic and find out if there is a need for an appointment.

The Museum of the Portuguese Language, installed in the historic Estação da Luz, opened a new exhibition this Friday (12). I dreamed in Portuguese! is the name of the attraction, which seeks to discuss migration in the 21st century as a human right and the participation of language in this process.

In addition to the new installation, the museum, reopened in July of this year after a fire, has, among the interventions after the renovation, a terrace overlooking the Jardim da Luz and the clock tower, symbol of the season. A reference center for Portuguese language studies was also created to host forums and bring researchers closer.

Strolling through the Memorial da América Latina, in Barra Funda, is another interesting experience, in which the visitor can appreciate the characteristic lines of the work of architect Oscar Niemeyer, who designed the space. Works by renowned artists are displayed along the esplanade and inside the cultural spaces. According to the institution, Niemeyer himself indicated in which places the works should be exhibited.

At the Afro Brasil Museum, located in Ibirapuera Park, the public will find 11,000 square meters with a collection of more than 6,000 works of art. They are paintings, sculptures, engravings, photographs, documents and ethnological pieces, by Brazilian and foreign authors, produced between the 18th century and the present day, as disclosed by the museum. The pieces present African and Afro-Brazilian cultural aspects.
