The writer Caio Fernando Abreu (1948-1996) won a musical that explores his life and work in a short season in the city of São Paulo during the month of July. The show “Not to Scream ” was conceived by the Company Under the skin and by the director Erika Altimeyer .
In the plot, Caio returns to the mansion where he lived the last years of his life, in the Menino Deus neighborhood, in Porto Alegre, after a long period away. Immersed in diffuse and imprecise memories, the writer tells — with the help of his iconic characters — letters and stories to understand how and why he got there, where he should go and, above all, why the dogs won’t stop barking outside.
The play promises to move the audience as it tells the story of the author, who carries in his writings a vision of the darkest and also most beautiful aspects of humanity.
The theater company brings together actors Raphael Mota, Rua, Silvano Vieira, Victor Barreto and Cláudio Ribeiro under the argument of the need to break the silence imposed by social norms of gender and sexuality. The original music and lyrics for the musical are by Alfredo Del-Penho and the musical direction is by Guilherme Gila.
The collective of actors is made up of LGBT+ people who want to discuss topics such as homophobia, transphobia, racism, and xenophobia. “We want to talk about what hurts, what moves, what moves us, with absolute freedom and, above all, gushing poetry,” he argues.
The same actors had previously been together in the off-Broadway musical “Naked Boys Singing! Brasil”
Caio Fernando Abreu is one of the most popular writers in contemporary Brazilian literature. With a timeless body of work marked by existential anguish and homoeroticism, he has won the Jabuti Prize three times.
