Musk department uses to spy on employees, sources say

United States President Donald Trump’s government officials have told some federal officials that the team of technologists from the department led by Elon Musk uses artificial intelligence to watch over the communications of at least one federal agency in search of hostility against Trump, two people said.

Although much of the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) remains involved in confidentiality, surveillance would mark extraordinary use of technology to identify expressions of disloyalty in a workforce already shaken by generalized layoffs and severe cost cuts.

The Doge team is also using the Signal application to communicate, according to another person with knowledge of the subject, which may violate federal registration maintenance rules, as messages can be configured to disappear after a period.

They “heavily” implanted Musk’s Chatbot Grok Ai, – an aspiring chatgpt rival – as part of his federal government reduction work, this person said.

Reuters could not establish exactly how Grok is being used.

The White House, Doge and Musk did not respond to requests for comments.

The use of AI and signal reinforces concerns between cyber security experts and governmental ethics that Doge is operating with limited transparency and that Musk or Trump government could use the information collected with AI to promote their own interests or to pursue political targets.

Kathleen Clark, a government expert at the University of Washington, St. Louis, explained that the use of Signal by Doge increases concerns about data security practices, after government authority were criticized last month by the mistaken inclusion of a journalist on a chat about the planning for military operations in Yemen.

“If they are using the signal and are not backing up all messages in federal files, then they are acting illegally,” she said.

Indiscriminate use of technologies

Reuters interviews with almost 20 people knowingly of Doge’s operations – and an examination of hundreds of pages of lawsuits of action that disputes Doge’s access to data – highlight the unorthodox use of AI and other technologies in federal government operations.

At the Environmental Protection Agency, for example, some managers were informed by Trump nominees that Musk’s team is implementing AI to monitor employees, including looking for language in communications considered hostile to Trump or Musk, the two people reported.

Republican employees pointed out that Doge would be looking for people whose work would not align with the government’s mission, the two sources said.

“Watch out for what you say, what you type and what you do,” said one manager, according to one of the sources.

Musk describes doge as a technology -oriented effort to make the federal government more efficient, aiming at waste, fraud and abuse.

According to him, the goal is to cut $ 1 trillion in spending, or 15% of the annual US budget.

Few contests that the US government and its computer systems need modernization.

But critics claim that the American leader and his counselor are purging the government of nonpartisan civil servants and installing loyal people who would close their eyes to corruption.
