Elon Musk’s Starlink will provide wireless internet during flights to the Hawaiian Airlines fleet, the airline announced on Monday.
Under the agreement, the companies are in the early stages of implementation and wireless internet is expected to be installed on selected aircraft next year, the airline said.
Starlink, a SpaceX subsidiary, has been in talks with various airlines for months to provide in-flight internet service as it seeks to expand its reach beyond consumers and households in rural areas of the world with minimal to no internet access at all.
Hawaiian said it would equip the Airbus A330 and A321neo aircraft, as well as an incoming Boeing 787-9 fleet with Starlink’s satellite internet connection service.
Starlink signed its first deal with JSX last week and includes the equipment of 100 aircraft with Starlink terminals.
Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported that Delta Air Lines was in talks with Starlink and conducting exploratory testing of its technology.
Hawaiian has said it has no plans to expand its service to Boeing 717 short-haul aircraft between the Hawaiian Islands.
