Tesla will not set up car plants in any location where it is not allowed to sell and service its vehicles first, CEO Elon Musk said in a tweet when asked about his plans for India.
Tesla is urging the Indian government to cut taxes so it can sell imported cars to test the market before committing to building a plant in the country.
The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has encouraged Tesla to move into local production of vehicles and has asked the company to avoid selling cars made in Shanghai, within the country.
Musk also said his other company, Space Exploration Technologies, was awaiting government approval in India to launch the Starlink internet service. Starlink uses satellites to provide internet services, creating an alternative to terrestrial systems.
