Mustique Island, the Caribbean island loved by the English Royal family

Mustiquebeloved by English royal familypart of the Lesser Antilles, like a few other Caribbean islands, is fortunate to have very different stretches of coastline. On the one hand you enjoy the quiet Carribean Sea with its golden beaches, in the shade of tall palm trees. On the other side, the wilder one, you can breathe in the smell of the Atlantic Ocean, admiring the waves crashing on the coast.

There are no direct flights to reach it and it is a private island (now owned by the company The Mustique Company which he owns a luxury hotel and some private villas) loved and frequented not only by English royalty, but also by many celebrities. In short, it is certainly not the destination for everyone, but for those who want to live a dream, here you will find all the information to organize the trip.

The island loved by Princess Margaret

If today it is so famous and desired it is also thanks to the most rebellious of princesses, Margaret, sister of Queen Elizabeth, who had a special relationship with the island of Mustique. She who loved the Caribbean so much, so much so that she chose it as the destination for her honeymoon with the photographer Anthony Armstrong-Jonesreceived a plot of land on his as a gift from a family friend Caribbean island private, Mustique.

It was the Sixties and the island was frequented by eccentric people from the international jet set. It was an exclusive and little-known place that only became famous when, in 1976, some photos of it were published Margaret together with Roddy Llewellyn, her lover seventeen years younger. The shots started the process of separation between the two, but consecrated the island which continued to remain a special place for the princess too.

Princess Margaret's house was later sold by her son, but over the years the island has remained a special place for the Royal family, so much so that even William and Kate spent some summer holidays here. Together with them, many other celebrities have also chosen it over the years: Mick Jagger, Bryan Adams and Tommy Hilfiger bought a house in Mustique, Taylor SwiftBill Gates, Victoria Beckham, Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom go there for their holidays.

Mustique Island today

Most visitors come from the UK, but the US and Canadian markets are also growing. Of course, travelers are people with ample economic resources – prices start from around €1,000 per night – but people don't come to Mustique to show off wealth, on the contrary. The island is considered a refuge, where you can disconnect from everything, turn off your phones and live a simple seaside life. From the dress code to the restaurants to the design aesthetic, everything on this island is chic without having to prove it.

Privacy and discretion: those who come to Mustique are essentially looking for this. Then the small environment, the relaxed atmosphere, mean that guests often organize dinners or parties together after meeting on the beach or in a restaurant. On the contrary many return every year around the same timeto meet the same people, just like in any holiday destination.

The Cotton House it is the only hotel on the island and has various accommodation solutions (luxury suites and cottages), a wellness center and three restaurants serving every type of cuisine, from local to international. The hotel can also arrange water activities such as snorkeling, diving, sailing, kayaking and fishing. The hotel is usually chosen by solo or couple travelers or by those arriving in Mustique for the first time because it allows you to more easily meet other visitors and islanders who frequent the Cotton House during the Friday happy hour evening or barbecues organized on the beach.

Island regulars and groups usually choose to rent instead one of the private villas. There are more than 80 of them, some of which are owned by well-known people, such as Tommy Hilfiger who owns the famous Palm Beach mansion; others were designed by famous architects and interior designers such as Paolo Piva and David Kleinbergwhose work flows into the Hummingbird villa.

All villas have housekeepers, chefs and butlers to manage guests' needs and wishes. You can choose between different types of villas, from two to nine bedrooms. They all have a swimming pool and views of the Ocean or Caribbean Sea and are a mix between modern European and traditional Caribbean design. From some villas, such as Paradiso and Les Jolies Eaux (that of Princess Margaret), you can see both seas.
