“My daughter didn’t have freedom”, says former Cupertino partner on trial

Paulo Cupertino’s ex-partner and mother of daughter, Vanessa Tibcherani Matias Camargo, confirmed the abusive relationship between father and daughter this Thursday (10), during testimony before the Popular Jury, in São Paulo. Cupertino is accused of killing the former Chiquititas actor, along with his parents, João Alcisio and Miriam Selma, in June 2019, in the Pedreira neighborhood, in the south zone of São Paulo.

Vanessa told the jury that Paulo Cupertino took away his daughter’s freedom . The statement corroborates the prosecution’s thesis, arguing that the crime was premeditated and motivated by Cupertino’s non-compliance with his daughter’s relationship with Rafael Miguel.

During her testimony, at the Barra Funda Criminal Forum, in the West zone of São Paulo, Vanessa stated that Cupertino even took her daughter’s cell phone, Isabela Tibcherani Matias, when he found out that she was in a relationship with Rafael. According to her, Cupertino and Isabela never got along.

At another point, Isabela’s mother reveals that after Cupertino’s attitude, she helped her daughter communicate with her boyfriend. In tears, she recalled the crime scene and described the shots and the desperation of her daughter who went to help Rafael, who was hit by her father’s shots. The scientific police counted thirteen shots in the crimes.

THE Paulo Cupertino’s ex-partner said during trial that he was a “mythomaniac” and avoided saying his name. She also reported that there were numerous cases of aggression she suffered from her ex-partner. Vanessa and her daughter had asked to be heard without the presence of the defendant, which did not happen.

Judgment

Cupertino will be tried for triple qualified homicide and could face up to 90 years in prison. She has been in prison since 2022, when she was captured, after fleeing from authorities for almost three years. Two other men are accused of helping Cupertino during the escape. The jury will be made up of six women and one man, defined after drawing lots. According to the list of witnesses that the CNN had access, there will be fifteen testimonies between Thursday and Friday (11) . Initially, 18 people would testify, but the CNN found that three of them gave up.

The crime took place on June 9, 2019 and shocked the country. Cupertino managed to escape the authorities for three years, only being captured in May 2022 in an apartment in the South Zone of São Paulo, after passing through around 100 addresses in at least three countries – Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina.
