‘My heart is broken,’ Pope Francis says of US school attack

Pope Francis expressed his condolences for the tragedy of the Texas school shooting, in the United States, and directed his prayers to the victims and their families during the weekly audience this Wednesday morning (25).

“My heart is broken by the elementary school mass shooting in Texas,” he said. The pope also called for tighter gun controls and a commitment that “such tragedies never happen again”.

Other European leaders, including the prime ministers of Slovakia, Ireland and Finland, also sent their condolences.

“I was deeply saddened by the news from Texas, where children’s lives were taken in a murderous massacre,” said Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger.

Meanwhile, Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin called the shooting “a terrible and shocking tragedy” and offered his “sincere condolences” to the victims’ families.

Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin also sent her prayers to the victims’ families. “My heart goes out to everyone who lost their children and loved ones during the mass shooting at an elementary school in Texas,” Marin said.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also expressed their condolences for the shooting.

“Our thoughts are with the wounded and grieving victims of this inconceivable massacre for which there are almost no words,” Scholz said in a Twitter post.

Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez shared a video of Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr’s emotional speech on Twitter. “This everyday horror must stop in the US,” Sanchez said in the publication.
