“My Lady Jane”: discover the real story that inspired the series’ plot

The period series “My Lady Jane” arrived this week on Prime Video. The fantasy is set in 16th century England, where society is divided between “normal” humans, also called true humans, and Ethians, who are people who can transform into animals and are seen as the lowest caste in society.

The plot stars Lady Jane Gray, an English noblewoman who assumes the crown and spends her short reign trying to promote unity between the two classes.

The production is inspired by the best-selling book of the same name by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand and Jodi Meadows, which imagines a retelling of part of the history of England’s Tudor dynasty. Discover the real story that inspired the plot below.

Known as the “Nine Days Queen,” Jane Grey was an English noblewoman who reigned over England and Ireland from July 10 to 19, 1553, after the death of Edward VI. She assumed the throne because the then king wanted his heir to be a Protestant. Jane’s older half-sister, Mary, was Catholic.

During Jane’s reign, it was discovered that her will was not legal because it had not been approved by Parliament. This meant that Mary was next in line, legally, and that is why Jane was deposed after nine days, and Mary became queen.

In 1554, Jane and her husband, Guilford Dudley, were beheaded for “high treason” after they began speaking out against Mary’s Catholic reforms. They were seen as potential instigators of rebellion.
