US President Joe Biden said his “numbers are better in Israel” than they are domestically. This came as the Democrat commented on the war in the Gaza Strip during a press conference on Thursday (11).
“But in the end, I’m better than a lot of other people here too,” he commented next.
Biden stressed that the armed conflict must end and that Israel should not occupy Gaza at the end of the battles.
Biden commented on relationship with Israel
The US president also said there were “many things in retrospect I wish I had been able to convince the Israelis to do” after the October 7 attacks – and called the Israeli war cabinet “one of the most conservative war cabinets in Israel’s history.”
He cited his trip to Israel and communication with Egypt, Jordan and other Arab leaders to “reach a consensus” on sending more food, aid and medicine to Gaza.
“We pushed hard,” Biden said, “and Israel was occasionally less than cooperative.”
Biden said he has been negotiating with Israel since Prime Minister Golda Meir. “I know Israel well, I support Israel, but this war cabinet is one of the most conservative cabinets in Israel’s history,” he said.
The president said there is “no definitive answer other than a two-state solution.”
“It is time to end this war. That does not mean stopping going after (Yahya) Sinwar and Hamas and if you notice there is a growing dissatisfaction in the West Bank among Palestinians towards Hamas. Hamas is not popular now,” he said.
“There are a lot of moving parts. I just need to keep moving to make sure we do as much as we can toward a ceasefire,” Biden added.
Pressure against candidacy
The press conference comes as pressure mounts against Biden’s re-election bid within the Democratic Party, with more than 10 lawmakers calling for him to withdraw.
Biden’s campaign has been in a tough spot for weeks, after the 81-year-old president’s poor performance in a CNN debate against 78-year-old Donald Trump, his Republican rival, raised new concerns about his age and mental acuity.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll released last week showed Biden and Trump tied in the race at 40 percent each. Other opinion polls have shown Trump widening his lead over Biden.
