Videotaping themselves while singing, showing only a small part of their face to the camera: dozens of Afghan women are joining an online protest movement against the new law that bans women from being heard in public. The Taliban government announced last week that a law “to promote virtue and prevent immorality” based on sharia, Islamic law, was implemented in late July. Its 35 articles define the obligations and prohibitions, mainly clothing related, that largely concern women. Among other things, they are not allowed to sing or recite poetry in public.
