Myanmar: Suu Kyi’s sentence reduced from four to two years, according to state television

LAST UPDATE: 18:01

Myanmar’s ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s sentence has been reduced from four to two years after a partial pardon was granted by her head of the army-appointed government, state television (MRTV) reported.

Earlier in the day, a Myanmar court ruled that Suu Kyi, who was ousted after a February 1 coup, was charged with inciting riots and violating restrictions imposed by the coronavirus, prompting international outcry. critics called it a “fake trial”.

Former President Wayne Mead, who was also sentenced to four years in prison, will also have his sentence reduced to two years.

Suu Kyi and Win Mead will serve their sentences where they are being held, in an unknown location, which may mean they will not be sent to jail.

Washington denounces “insult” to justice

The United States today said the “unjust” sentencing of former Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi to prison was an “insult to democracy and justice in Burma.”

“We call on the regime to release Aung San Suu Kyi and all those detained unjustly, especially other democratically elected officials,” US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said in a statement.
