The United Nations Security Council on Wednesday condemned the Myanmar army’s massacre, in which the charred bodies of at least 35 people were found, including two Save the Children workers in the eastern part of the country.
Among the victims were at least four children, according to the Security Council, who stressed in a statement “the need for those responsible for these acts to be held accountable.”
The members of the Security Council called for an immediate end to the violence in Myanmar and said that it was important for “human rights to be respected” and for “the security of civilians to be guaranteed”.
The NGO Save the Children announced on Tuesday that two of its employees had been killed on December 24 in an attack “committed by members of the Myanmar army in the state of Kaya” in the eastern part of the country.
According to the Myanmar Witness Observatory, “35 people, including children and women, were burned and killed by soldiers on December 24 in the canton of Khrushchev.”
A spokesman for the military junta acknowledged on Saturday that clashes had broken out in the area and that armed men had killed people, without giving details.
Following the massacre, the US government again called for an arms embargo on Myanmar.
Myanmar is mired in chaos after the February coup that ended a ten-year transition to democracy. More than 1,300 civilians have since been killed in the crackdown by the armed forces, according to the NGO Prisoners of War Association.
