MYTILINEOS helps to improve the nutrition of vulnerable children

MYTILINEOS contributes in practice to the 2nd Global Sustainable Development Goal to reduce the food insecurity of vulnerable social groups in our country. Specifically, in 2021 the Company ensured the access of 4,000 children and adolescents from vulnerable social groups to adequate food of high nutritional value.

For the third consecutive school year, MYTILINEOS actively participated in the “NUTRITION” Program of the Prolepsis Institute, offering daily and throughout the school year, free nutritious meals, while promoting healthy eating habits to 225 students of 7 schools in Attica. The Program was immediately adapted to the specific conditions and requirements of the pandemic, with the aim of continuing to distribute food as smoothly as possible to all schools and to ensure the health and safety of children and the community. In this effort and during the suspension period of the schools, specially designed food packages were delivered to all the students, covering their nutritional needs through a complete and healthy breakfast.

The Company ensured the distribution of a total of 18,509 healthy meals addressing feeding problems and enhancing the correct food choices of children. The results of the quantitative and qualitative analysis after the completion of the Program show that through the daily feeding of the students the phenomena of food insecurity and hunger are reduced, the physical and mental health of the children is promoted and their eating habits are improved. In addition, the average rate of food insecurity decreased significantly by 23.3% while 73.3% of students stopped experiencing severe hunger at the end of the program.

In addition, MYTILINEOS in 2021 launched its cooperation with the Foundation for the fight against hunger & waste “Food Bank” implementing the program “Emergency Food Fund – for kids”, covering the needs of 25 meals and institutions in Attica to support children ( a) large families, (b) children living in institutions and (c) children with special needs (disabled).

During the pandemic, the nutritional needs of vulnerable social groups increased, making it imperative to participate in the program by offering quantities of food to items in greater need for one year. A total of 61,338 glasses of milk and cereals were distributed to 3,784 children, of which 149 live in 6 institutions and 1,448 are children with special needs.

The aim of the Company is to expand its collaborations in 2022, contributing even more to the elimination of hunger and the reduction of food insecurity of children from socially vulnerable groups. Already from 2018 until today, the company ensured through the “NUTRITION” program the distribution of 77,804 school healthy meals to 768 children in 21 kindergartens, primary schools and high schools.
