The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Anastasiadis, had a meeting with the President of Israel, Isaac Herzog, who is paying a one-day official visit to Cyprus. President Anastasiadis pointed out that their meeting was held in the shadow of the tragic events in Ukraine, noting that both agree that the situation can only be resolved through dialogue and diplomatic means. “As Cypriots we understand the wound of the Ukrainian people having suffered the tragic consequences of 1974 from the Turkish invasion,” Anastasiadis said, adding that Cyprus joins the international community in condemning the Russian invasion and taking action to providing assistance to the Ukrainian people.

He also said that they discussed with the President of Israel the bilateral relations and ways to further strengthen them, “relations that have already been strengthened in recent years both in politics and in other areas” while reviewing developments regarding energy cooperation, noting that, Among other things, “the war in Ukraine reinforces the view that the EU needs different and stable energy sources to ensure its energy security.”

He further added that if EastMed proves to be economically and technically viable, it could offer alternative energy sources in the EU.

President Anastasiadis also said that they discussed with President Herzog issues related to tackling the effects of Climate Change and his Initiative for the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.

He added that he had heard the views of the President of Israel on the importance of taking further action to establish credible, additional synergies in the region on the basis of international law.

Referring to the trilateral cooperation, Cyprus – Greece – Israel, President Anastasiadis said that both he and the President of Israel expressed satisfaction with the progress of this cooperation, noting the readiness of the United States to participate in the extended form of this format. that is, 3 plus 1.

Mr. Anastasiadis also noted that he informed his counterpart about the latest developments in the Cyprus issue and about his proposals for Confidence Building Measures, which, unfortunately, are being answered by Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership with demands for the creation of two states in violation of its resolutions. He also expressed his gratitude to President Herzog for the position of Israeli authorities in the Cyprus issue and for his personal interest and commitment to the efforts for the reunification of Cyprus.

He added that it is vital that all stakeholders work to create the necessary conditions that will lead to negotiations, so that there are results, while expressing appreciation to the President of Israel, who will convey the messages of the Cypriot Government to Turkey there. his upcoming visit.

For his part, the President of Israel said, among other things, that tragedies are unfolding in Ukraine.

He referred to the historic event when thousands of Jews were executed outside Kyiv during World War II, noting that a museum was set up in the area, which was attacked by Russian troops yesterday.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Israeli President referred to his country’s will to further strengthen bilateral relations with Cyprus, but also to the trilateral cooperation between Cyprus, Greece and Israel, which is a pillar of stability for the region, he said.

He also stressed that there is a relationship of deep trust between Cyprus and Greece.

He also thanked the President of the Republic for his positions in the field of energy cooperation, but also for the actions to address the consequences of Climate Change.

Finally, the President of Israel said that the tragedy in Ukraine is a reminder of the need for everyone to work together to protect the authorities, and therefore their interests, adding that this will be the message he will give to Turkey during his visit there. since, as he said, he believes in the cooperation of all peoples.
