N. Anastasiadis: Cyprus and Greece in absolute coordination against Turkish provocation

“We must not get carried away by the possible intentions of Ankara, that is to say the worsening of the climate”, said the President of the Republic of Cyprus N. Anastasiadis, underlining that Cyprus and Greece are in complete coordination.

In his statements after signing the book of condolence for former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, at the country’s embassy in Nicosia and being asked to comment on the information about the annexation of the occupied territories, President Anastasiades said that “we are watching everything calmly and the information we have I don’t think it should intensify the rumours. In addition, we maintain an attitude with Greece that is appropriate for European states that do not have revisionist aspirations and perceptions like some others.”

Asked how satisfied the government is with the reports of the UN Secretary-General, Mr. Anastasiadis said that “there are important gaps, there is an unacceptable equation and of course the corresponding step is being prepared, both to the Secretary-General and to the Members of the Security Council”.

To a journalist’s observation that Turkish provocation is constantly intensifying, the President of the Republic said that “we are watching them. On the one hand, they present an attempt by the Turkish government and its allies to exaggerate in terms of zeal to promote their revisionist policy, but the same time, the corresponding steps are being taken in every direction, towards every ally and especially towards the EU.

I don’t think we should get carried away by what Ankara’s ambitions might be, that is to say the worsening of the climate, to justify an unacceptable behavior”.

Asked to comment on the matter of the Turkish Cypriot leader sending letters to the UN Secretary General, the President said that this is done “as a dictate of actions. Therefore, yes, I think that everything is done for appearances and to reverse the image created by our own initiatives through important confidence-building measures that would really contribute to the creation of a positive climate that would lead, if adopted, to the resumption of dialogue”.

When asked if he is in communication with the Prime Minister of Greece, the President of the Republic of Cyprus said that “certainly and in absolute coordination”.
