N. Anastasiadis: Cyprus continues to implement its energy program despite Turkey’s threats

Arrangements are being made for a meeting with the UN Secretary-General next September, said the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Anastasiadis.

In his statements to journalists, on the sidelines of the commemoration of the hero Michalakis Paridis, in Anafotia, President Anastasiades, when asked if during his upcoming visit to New York in view of the UN General Assembly, next September, he will seek any development to help the resumption of the negotiations on the Cyprus issue, he said that “already, talks are being made for a meeting with the Secretary-General and of course the meeting is only intended to convey the need to implement what has been agreed with the Secretary-General”.

When asked if there was any progress after the contacts that the UN Assistant Secretary-General Mr. Miroslav Yetza had on the Cyprus issue, the President said “no. Nothing new. As long as Turkey insists, unfortunately there is a retreat from UN decisions. And that saddens me particularly”.

Asked to comment on the issue of the discovery of new hydrocarbon deposits in the Cypriot EEZ and how Cyprus can participate in the effort to provide energy to Europe, Mr. Anastasiadis said that “the Republic of Cyprus, despite the threats of Turkey, despite what is recorded with the violations of our EEZ, continues to implement the energy program of the Republic of Cyprus.

As planned, both TOTAL and Qatar Petroleum will proceed with the surveys, they are already conducting seismic surveys, therefore, what remains is a discussion that we will have with the European Authorities, finally, to include Cyprus in the plans for de-dependence Europe from the needs it has today, due to the war situation in Ukraine”.

Asked if the exploitation of the deposits can be speeded up in time, the President said that “it is not a matter that can be determined by the Republic of Cyprus, it is also a matter for the companies, which will invest according to the findings. They take some time”.
