N. Anastasiadis: EU sanctions can not have a greater impact on member states than on Russia itself

Issues of bilateral relations, education, tourism, trade, investment, but also the avoidance of double taxation were discussed, among others, by the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis with the Prime Minister of Croatia Andrei Plenkovi,, who is paying an official visit to Cyprus.

President Anastasiadis, among other things, said that they discussed issues of the European agenda and especially the situation in Ukraine, about which he was briefed by the Prime Minister of Croatia after his visit to Kyiv on May 8, noting that the situation is deteriorating at an alarmingly high rate. .

The Cypriot President stressed that the EU will continue to support Ukraine politically, diplomatically, economically and technically, but also to express its full support for its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. “At the same time, we are united in our adoption of sanctions against Russia, in an effort to pressure it to reconsider its actions, to end hostilities and to engage in negotiations to find a diplomatic solution,” he said. These sanctions inevitably come at a cost to our economies as well.

However, the European Union sanctions against Moscow can not have a greater impact on the member states than on Russia itself, the President of the Republic of Cyprus pointed out.

“We have recently seen some proposals that could have a huge adverse effect on the economies of the Member States and a questionable impact on Russia,” Anastasimis said. the EU must align their foreign and security policy with those of the EU.

“I am referring, among other things, to Turkey. Turkey’s decision not to comply with sanctions against Russia is unacceptable and it is right for the EU to put pressure on Turkey to adopt these sanctions and abandon the policy of interest which, among other things, undermines the purpose of the sanctions “.

Referring to the Cyprus issue, President Anastasiadis said that he briefed Prime Minister Plenkovi για on the latest developments and his proposals for confidence-building measures, as well as on the uncompromising stance of Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership. He also informed about the ongoing provocations and violations of Turkey both on the land and in the sea zone of the Republic of Cyprus. Nevertheless, he said, he would continue his efforts and insist on the need for the Turkish Cypriot side to return to negotiations in order to resume talks from where they had been suspended. Finally, he thanked the Prime Minister of Croatia for the support of his country and himself personally in the efforts to find a lasting and functional solution to the Cyprus problem.

On the other hand, in addition to bilateral issues, Mr. Plenkovic, referring to the energy crisis, said that Cyprus and Croatia could study ways for both countries to take advantage of their gas potential. pipelines and other related investments.

Regarding the Cyprus issue, the Croatian Prime Minister said that he strongly supports the initiatives of President Anastasiadis that can increase trust between the two communities, noting that “Croatia has always held a position on the Cyprus issue, supporting your efforts, in favor of a peaceful solution and supporting all efforts to bring the parties closer to your proposals, which are in line with UN Security Council resolutions on respect for international law, sovereignty and territorial integrity. “It will not change. It has always been continuous and clear,” he said.
