N. Anastasiadis: France’s support for the reunification of the country is always important

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Anastasiadis, attended the reception hosted by the Embassy of France at the embassy residence, on the occasion of the National Day of France.

In his greeting at the reception, President Anastasiades, after wishing a speedy recovery to French ambassador Salina Grene Catalano, who is ill with coronavirus, praised the work of the French Presidency of the EU, as well as the personal role of the country’s President Emmanuel Macron in the efforts resolution of the Ukrainian.

President Anastasiades also referred to the excellent relations between Cyprus and France, characterizing the two countries as strategic partners.

He also pointed to France’s contribution to regional initiatives in the Eastern Mediterranean that promote cooperation, including the East Med Gas Forum.

He also noted the involvement of the TOTAL company in the Cypriot EEZ, which, he said, shows France’s vote of confidence in our Energy Policy and expressed the hope that new hydrocarbon discoveries “bring us closer to our vision of creation, together with neighboring countries, of a strategic energy corridor from the Eastern Mediterranean to Europe”.

He also referred to the cooperation between Cyprus and France in areas such as Defense, at the same time expressing appreciation for France’s frequent naval presence in Cyprus.

He also pointed to the agreement between the two countries for the purchase of Airbus helicopters for the defense needs of the National Guard.

President Anastasiades also referred to the operation of the Franco-Cypriot School in Nicosia, which celebrates 10 years since its establishment this year.

Referring to the Cyprus problem, President Anastasiades expressed his gratitude to France for its full solidarity and firm support to the Republic of Cyprus in terms of achieving a fair, functional and sustainable solution to the Cyprus problem, based on the Security Council resolutions of UN and the European acquis.

“Your support, including those of Turkish Cypriots working for the reunification of the country and not the maintenance of the status quo or the permanent division of Cyprus into two states, is always important,” the President said, noting his determination for the resumption of the talks to reach a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation solution.

He also referred to the confidence-building measures he proposed, which can help restart dialogue on the reunification of Cyprus, which he said are still on the table.

Finally, President Anastasiades underlined that France is and will remain one of the closest allies of Cyprus.
