Instead of discussing the appointment of an expert, personal or otherwise envoy of the UN Secretary-General from third countries or other countries, this role will be assumed by the Secretary-General through representatives who serve the UN, through UN officials, said the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis.
In his statements to journalists, attending the ceremony of awarding the International Investment Awards, in Limassol, President Anastasiades, was invited to refer to the proposals of the Turkish Cypriot leader that he delivered to the UN Assistant Secretary-General Miroslav Yetsia today, which took place after the meeting of Mr. Yetza with the President, he said that “during the morning meeting there was not the slightest mention of how either the United Nations or the Assistant Secretary-General were aware of any proposals on the part of Mr. Tatar. Therefore, neither were we. And so far they have not I have taken note of what they contain. Our response will depend on the content.”
Asked if he was satisfied with his meeting with Mr. Yejia and if he had conveyed what he wanted, the President said “and of course I conveyed, but the most important thing is that the United Nations will act in trying to create conditions for the reunification of the dialogue through the General Secretariat, i.e. either the specific official, or others who represent the General Secretary and no appointments are needed.
Let’s hope that the Turkish Cypriots will also realize, and Turkey in particular that directs the Turkish Cypriots, that it is in everyone’s interest to find a solution, always based on the resolutions of the UN, the Security Council, the European acquis”.
Asked if there is anything on the issue of appointing a special envoy, the President said “I repeat, instead of discussing the appointment of a special, personal or otherwise envoy of the Secretary-General from third or other countries, this role will be assumed by the Secretary-General through representatives serving the UN , by UN officials”.
