N. Anastasiadis: Until the last day of my term, I will continue the efforts for a solution that will reunite Cyprus

The excellent relations between Cyprus and the USA, as well as the common will to further strengthen them, were mentioned by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, in his greeting at the reception hosted by the US Ambassador to Nicosia, Judith Garber, on the occasion of the 246th anniversary of the Independence of the United States of America.

In his greeting at the reception, President Anastasiades said, among other things, that there is an excellent and constantly improving partnership between the two countries that has developed in recent years, adding that the vision for further strengthening it is shared.

Referring to the actions that contributed to the strengthening of bilateral relations, the President of the Republic pointed out, among other things, the signing of the Declaration of Intent on Security Matters, the joint commitment and close cooperation in the fight against terrorism, human and drug trafficking, as well as for cooperation on cyber security issues.

He also pointed out the “American investment”, as he said, in the CYCLOPS center, “an excellent regional educational center”, as well as the activity of American companies in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus.

He also referred to the contribution and support of the USA to the tripartite cooperation mechanisms of Cyprus and the EastMed Gas Forum.

Regarding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Mr. Anastasiades said the entire international community condemned the invasion and stands by the Ukrainian people, noting the need for logic and diplomacy to prevail.

He underlined the similarities between the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, noting that the pretexts were the same.

Referring to the Cyprus issue, President Anastasiades pointed out Turkish intransigence, but also the ongoing challenges and violations of international law both on land and in the maritime zones of the Republic of Cyprus.

He added that the Greek Cypriot side, looking to the future, continues to promote initiatives and ideas that help create the right conditions for the resumption of the negotiation process, on the basis of his own proposal for Confidence Building Measures, which address the concerns of both communities .

“Until the last day of my term, I will continue tireless efforts to reach a solution that will reunite Cyprus on the agreed basis for a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation, based on the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council”, stressed President Anastasiades.

He added that “it is of great importance that our Turkish Cypriot compatriots remain committed to the continuation of the dialogue, and to abandon any pretexts and unacceptable claims and prerequisites that in no way serve the interests of Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots”.

Finally, the President of the Republic expressed deep appreciation for the USA’s position of principle and continuous support in the Cyprus issue, including its position regarding the need for Ankara to refrain from actions that violate the resolutions of the UN Security Council and international law, including the Convention on the Law of the Sea.
