The President of PASOK – Movement for Change, Nikos Androulakis, had a meeting with the President and MPs of the People’s Democratic Party (HDP), Mithat Sancar, today in Brussels.
During the meeting, Mr. Mithat Sancar described the situation inside Turkey for the human rights and silencing efforts faced by the authoritarian regime of President Erdogan. It is characteristic that the former President of HDP, Selahattin DemirtaÅŸ as well as many other MPs and elected Mayors are in prison while at the same time there is a procedure before the Constitutional Court for the complete ban of the party.
Mr. Androulakis expressed his solidarity with Mithat Sancar and thanked him for his fight for a democratic and peaceful Turkey, noting that the HDP was the only party that had opposed the conversion of Hagia Sophia from a museum to a mosque. He also stressed that Mr. Erdogan with his choices divides Turkish society with unpredictable consequences and threatens the geopolitical stability of the wider region. For this reason, it is necessary for the European Parliament and the EU to stand firmly against Erdogan’s authoritarianism, to take effective action against human rights abuses at home and his revisionist moves in the Eastern Mediterranean, with targeted sanctions against and the imposition of arms embargoes by European states.
