N. Androulakis: We pay the secret services to tell us who undermines democracy

The President of PASOK – Movement for Change, Nikos Androulakis, visited the agricultural cooperative in Tympaki, Crete, in the morning.

In his statements to the media, Mr. Androulakis noted to those questioned about the attempt to trap his mobile phone:

“It is an issue that has shocked me because I never expected in an EU country, situations that previous generations experienced, to experience them personally. And it is sad to see from various of your colleagues, MPs from other parties, trying to degrade a an issue which is unprecedented in the European Parliament. The mobile phones of about 250 MEPs, dozens of associates have been checked. Nothing similar has been found, an attempt to trap an MEP who also happens to be the President of the country’s third parliamentary party.

Unfortunately I see the government making a desperate attempt to downgrade it. We don’t pay the secret services to be watched or to be told they aren’t watching us. We pay them to say who are those who undermine democracy and institutions. Because the one who tried to trap my mobile phone with such modern software that it can robotize it and open the camera and microphone whenever it wants even when it is closed, had a specific purpose. I expect the truth from justice, the government and the competent agencies. Who had the audacity to take this initiative undermining transparency, undermining the smooth functioning of the political system. And any attempt by the government or other parties to downplay it for me is reprehensible and shows that some people don’t understand that the quality of democracy is not a secondary issue. It is a primary issue for our people who have fought enormously to have freedom and democracy.”

Farmers and producers of the region expressed to Mr. Androulakis the difficulties they face with the explosion of price appreciation and energy costs. Mr. Androulakis presented the package of measures that PASOK – Change Movement has prepared for the primary sector.

“Our farmers are faced with an unimaginable cost of production due to the energy crisis and price increases. Their support is necessary and as PASOK we have developed a set of proposals to protect their income” he pointed out noting the need to cover part of the cost of supplies and animal feed, to impose a ceiling on the retail price of electricity, to refund the fuel tax based on the consumption of each farm and to provide financing to farmers – agricultural businesses – cooperatives and energy communities for the installation of Renewable Energy Sources.

Then the President of PASOK – Movement for Change referred to the long delay in the delivery of the Heraklion-Mesara road and the responsibilities of the SYRIZA and ND governments. In addition, he noted that 2022 had been set by the Government as a milestone for the much-discussed project of the Platis river dam with the transmission pipeline to Mesara, a schedule that will be closely monitored.

An equally important issue that the President of PASOK – Movement for Change discussed with the farmers and producers of the region is the lack of workers.

“For the land workers, we have proposed and brought a related amendment, but the government did not accept it to provide a solution to the problem:

a) immediate doubling of the ceiling of land workers from re-call per regional Unit

b) registration and licensing for work of all those who are already in our country and are working irregularly,

c) formation of a flexible mechanism for the re-call of land workers from Third Countries, with the possibility of intermediate visits to their homeland”.

At the end of his presentation, Mr. Androulakis emphasized that “the upgrading and transformation of the Mesara Agricultural School is imperative so that it becomes a center for education, training and the use of innovation and research for the benefit of the agricultural world”.
