N. Dendias: Common commitment to International Law and UNCLOS connects us with Japan

Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias will pay a visit to Japan today and tomorrow, Wednesday. “I am visiting Japan (12/4 – 13/4), a large country in Asia and an important player in global geopolitical developments, with which we share a common commitment to International Law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea ( UNCLOS) “says Nikos Dendias in a post on Twitter from Tokyo. During his stay in Tokyo, the Foreign Minister will meet on Wednesday with his Japanese counterpart Hayashi Yoshimasa, as part of expanded talks between the two delegations. He will also meet with President (and former Foreign Minister) Taro Kono and members of the Japanese-Greek Friendship Group of the Japanese Parliament, as well as with the President and members of the Board of the Hellenic Chamber of Commerce in Japan. .

The two ministers are scheduled to make joint statements to the press at around 07:40 Greek time, after which a working lunch will take place.

In particular, regarding the situation in Ukraine, diplomatic sources noted that Japan has identified with the decisions of the European Union and the G-7 regarding the Russian invasion, having imposed sanctions on Russia and having – in fact – severed its relations with it. the country. They pointed out that Japan, taking a clear stance on Ukraine from the beginning of the crisis, has effectively ended the tradition of decades of introversion in foreign policy and is now taking on a more active role on the international stage.

Regarding bilateral relations, the same sources stressed that emphasis will be given to the sectors of economy, trade and tourism and a Memorandum of Cooperation is expected to be signed soon between the two countries.
