N. Dendias: Greece-Egypt relations are at an unprecedented high level

The strong bonds of friendship and fruitful cooperation between Greece and Egypt, while noting that today the bilateral relationship has reached unprecedented high levels and will continue in the future, highlighted the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, in his greeting during yesterday’s event Egyptian Embassy in Athens on the occasion of the National Day of Egypt. “We have done a lot in the last three years” Nikos Dendias pointed out and observed that these reflect the common vision and the will of the peoples to prosper in this challenging part of the world, the Eastern Mediterranean.

In particular, the Minister of Foreign Affairs made special reference to the signing of the bilateral agreement on the delimitation of the maritime zones between the two countries, after almost thirty years of negotiations. “An Agreement based on the International Law of the Sea, UNCLOS” he underlined and confided that he will always treasure that day.

He also emphasized the close cooperation of the two countries in the fields of defense, economy, investments, tourism and energy, while he made special reference to the promotion of the tripartite cooperation scheme of Greece, Egypt and Cyprus.

Depicting the excellent level of relations, Nikos Dendias said that despite the restrictions from the pandemic, the two countries have exchanged a significant number of visits. “Personally I’ve been to Cairo, I think, twelve times and I’m getting ready for the 13th,” he noted.

Besides, the Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized the signing of the agreement on the electrical interconnection between the two countries, describing it as a “moment of pride” for the bilateral relations.

Afterwards, he pointed out that Egypt knows that Greece is a firm supporter of it within the EU and in other international forums.

Referring to Egypt, he said that it is a leading force in the Arab world and beyond and emphasized that it has an important role to play in strengthening security in the wider region.

Finally, he congratulated Egypt on its national holiday and wished “happiness and prosperity to the friendly people of Egypt”.
