The need for the Greek economic diplomacy to be planned with a long-term horizon and a clear goal, underlined the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias, in his greeting at the event for the presentation of the 2nd National Strategic Extroversion Plan for 2022.
As he stressed, the economic diplomacy of our country has three axes: the promotion and promotion of Greek products to become competitive in international markets, the practical support of the human element, ie Greek exporters and the emergence of our country as an attractive investment destination .
“We are making a huge effort to take advantage of our geostrategic position, which is also a challenge. And to claim, always with realism and with a sense of our size, the upgrade of our footprint in the wider region,” he noted.
He said that the actions of economic diplomacy emphasize the promotion of energy issues, but also of interconnection and logistics, because Greece “can become an important regional center”.
According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, 2021 was a very important year for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as with the implementation of the new Organization of the Ministry, a broad reform effort was implemented at the legislative level, which continues.
“The structure of the ministry has been modernized. At the level of legislation, that is, the full range of economic and public diplomacy, international development cooperation, as well as the issues of Hellenes abroad have been integrated.” He noted and explained that thus the diplomatic mission is legally unified and the Undersecretaries of State A. Katsaniotis and K. Frangogiannis command the two wings.
“Thus, diplomacy is combined with its classic form, which is exercised by the Minister and the Deputy Minister, Mr. Varvitsiotis, with a modern, dynamic and multidimensional work that has to do with economic diplomacy, public diplomacy and with Hellenes Abroad “, he noted.
Mr. Dendias noted that the goal “is to adapt to the ever-changing international data and the ever-emerging challenges. Because, I think what has been seen in the 21st century is that crises also create windows of opportunity. And if there are reflexes, they can “to bring positive results. So, I would say the report is encouraging.”
Greece, as he stressed, through constant contacts with his counterparts and a mobility, expanded the circle of its bilateral relations and cultivated closer ties with countries that were not its traditional partners, such as Nigeria, Angola, Senegal, Ghana, Rwanda, Gabon, Cape Verde. Also, the new embassy in Senegal, in French-speaking Africa, the reopening of the embassy in Tripoli and the consulate general in Benghazi.
He also referred to the catalyst for Greece’s relations with sub-Saharan Africa, vaccine diplomacy, and recalled that we have sent about 5 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines either bilaterally or through the European COVAX mechanism.
Greece also focused on Asia and the Gulf countries, with its recent visits to India and Japan and the country’s participation in international and regional organizations and multilateral cooperation schemes, led by 3 + 1 Greece, Israel, Cyprus and USA, which we aspire to become 4.
For the first time in its history, Greece is conducting three campaigns at the same time: UN Security Council, presidency of the General Assembly (2035), participation in the Human Rights Council (2027-28). “Greece has never conquered two of the three. Only once,” he said.
Mr. Dendias noted that Greece had invested more than 100 billion in the crisis and stressed: “These funds must be reinvested and, in fact, increased, if our country wants to enter significant economic growth rates.” .
“Greece is an economy of about $ 200 billion,” he said. To really become what we all want, we must go beyond the 300 billion in the visible time horizon and approach the 400 billion in the next 15 years. About that time we will be proportional to the size of a country like the Netherlands. In other words, we do not consider this to be a big idea. “This is an effort to come to the European measures that we deserve and deserve.”
The structure of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for economic diplomacy is the network of embassies and offices of economic and commercial affairs around the world, Enterprise Greece, the Hellenic Export Credit Company. The actions are reflected in the National Strategic Plan for Extroversion, which is the roadmap of our economic diplomacy.
“The Mitsotakis government recognizes the unique capabilities that Greek diplomacy has and invests a lot in it,” Mr. Dendias underlined.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs must become a dynamic organization that renews itself, takes on challenges, reshapes the conditions through the changing geopolitical environment. An environment where vigilance and exploitation of opportunities is the necessary condition for our national survival,” he concluded.
