The issue of International Law and the International Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) was raised, in addition to the framework of bilateral political and economic relations, by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias during the series of meetings he had today with his counterparts on the sidelines of the 55th Session of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) foreign ministers, which is being held in Cambodia. “In other words, the need to have a stable framework within which both free navigation and safety and cooperation in the maritime environment will be ensured” as Nikos Dendias emphasized in his statement during his participation in the work of the Synod.
He also found that all the countries he discussed with today had a very positive response to this particular position. “In general, it seems that in the context that exists today and following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the international community increasingly understands that revisionism, the questioning of borders and the non-signatory of the rules of International Law and the International Law of the Sea leads humanity to adventures and that we must have a firm attitude, an attitude that ensures progress, stability and prosperity,” the foreign minister underlined.
In fact, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in the context of the Summit, signed the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Greece and ASEAN.
Regarding his contacts, Nikos Dendias met today with the second foreign minister of Brunei, with the foreign minister of Singapore, with the host and foreign minister of Cambodia and with the secretary general of ASEAN, while tomorrow he will have other four bilateral meetings, with the foreign ministers of Qatar, China, Thailand and Indonesia.
In more detail, in the meeting with Brunei’s second foreign minister Erywan Yusof, bilateral relations, investments, joint commitment to UNCLOS, cooperation in the UN, as well as developments in Southeast Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean, such as refers to a post by N. Dendias on Twitter.
Later, talks with Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan focused on cooperation between the two countries and international organizations, developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, Ukraine and UNCLOS as the sole authority to resolve maritime zone issues worldwide.
Then, during the meeting with the secretary general of the ASEAN organization Lim Jock Hoi, Nikos Dendias expressed his satisfaction with the accession of Greece to the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation of Southeast Asia. The promotion of cooperation in shipping, culture, economy and EU-ASEAN relations was also in focus.
In addition, the foreign minister met with his Cambodian counterpart Prak Sokhonn, whom he congratulated on the ASEAN presidency. They also discussed bilateral cooperation in international organizations and the developments in Myanmar. The views between Greece and Cambodia on matters of International Law are the same on many issues, Nikos Dendias underlined in his post on social media.
