N. Dendias: The crimes committed in Mariupoli are a matter of particular importance for Greece

Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias participated in the International Conference on Accountability in Ukraine, which was organized in The Hague by Dutch Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra together with the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court and the European Commission.

In his statement, Nikos Dendias emphasized that for Greece this is a matter of particular importance. “First of all for the crimes committed in Mariupol, and indeed after my meeting with survivors from Mariupol, two days ago in Odessa” as he explained. In this context, he underlined Greece’s determination to do everything it can to help the International Criminal Court with its small forces, “because we believe that the worst thing that can happen is impunity”.

On the margins of the work of the Conference, the Minister of Foreign Affairs held bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Denmark and the Netherlands. As N. Dendias mentioned, he discussed with them the issues of the security policy of the European Union. In particular, with the Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs Jeppe Kofond, he discussed the developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, the cooperation between Greece and Denmark within the framework of PESCO (permanent structured cooperation in the fields of defense and security between the EU member states), the refugee / immigration issue and his recent visit to Odessa, as mentioned by N. Dendias in his post on Twitter. Earlier, during the meeting with the foreign minister of the Netherlands, Wopke Hoekstra also discussed the developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, his recent trip to Odessa and cooperation in the framework of PESCO.

He also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iceland. “Iceland is a small country, which with Greece, however, has close relations, many similarities, an island country, with which we have many points of common interest in the context of the United Nations Organization, in the context of the Law of the Sea” he pointed out in N. Dendias statement. “We had a fruitful discussion on bilateral cooperation in NATO and the Council of Europe, as well as EU-Iceland relations,” he also noted in a post on Twitter.
