N. Dendias: The EU must face the threats in the Eastern Mediterranean

The need for a frank discussion on what threatens the EU in the Eastern Mediterranean region, how it should be addressed and how violations of international law and disputes over sovereignty should be addressed, Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said in a statement. attending the informal “Gymnich” Meeting of EU Foreign Ministers in Brest. “The informal Council today has very important issues to discuss. First of all, the EU Strategic Compass, with particular reference to anti-EU threats. One area from which such threats emanate is the Eastern Mediterranean, and I think that should be the basis for that. “There should be an honest discussion about what threatens the EU in this region and how this should be addressed. How should violations of international law and disputes over the sovereignty of EU member states be addressed?” Nikos Dendias stressed.

According to the program, the Minister of Foreign Affairs participates in a joint working lunch of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and the Ministers of Defense of the European Union on the topic of “Strategic Compass”. A revised text will be presented at the working lunch, based on observations and discussions between Member States that have taken place in recent weeks.

In fact, in the afternoon, the first working meeting will be held to discuss the “Security Situation in Eastern Europe”.

Tomorrow, Friday, after the end of the second meeting to discuss EU-China relations, a working lunch will be hosted by the French Presidency to discuss EU-Africa relations, with a view to of the relevant Summit to be held next month (February 2022).

Referring to the EU-Africa debate after his recent visits to African countries (Rwanda, Ghana, Nigeria, Angola, Gabon), Nikos Dendias highlighted the importance of the African continent, noting that there are many things to discuss. “Africa is the continent with the fastest growing population and the fastest growing economy, it is a part of the future of the planet,” he said. In this context, he stressed that the EU, as an economic space next to Africa, has a lot to discuss with it and a lot to contribute to its future.

It is noted that Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias was received at the informal “Gymnich” Meeting of EU Foreign Ministers in Brest, his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian and the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell.
