N. Iliopoulos: The government underestimated the accuracy

“For a blatant underestimation of the problem of accuracy by the Mitsotakis government and for ND interventions that blatantly affected the income of the society”, the spokesperson of SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance, Nassos Iliopoulos, spoke in an interview with “S” on TV.

He said that the prime minister at the TIF “announced a budget of only 150 million euros, with ND saying then that accuracy will be a temporary problem until Christmas”, while SYRIZA pointed out that “the ‘good scenario’ speaks of at least 9 months “and how” some analysts in the US today say that especially energy can occupy us for two years “. “I hope they do not fall in, but we must also plan for the bad scenario,” he said, but blamed the government for “not only underestimating the problem, but its policies also hurting people’s incomes.” He said in particular that he “cut 2.5 billion euros from retirees, after abolishing the restoration of part of the 13th pension that had been legislated by the SYRIZA government in 2019”.

Regarding the proposals of SYRIZA-PS to deal with accuracy, he noted: first, increase of the minimum wage to 800 euros, as “Greece is the only country in the eurozone, where the minimum wage remains lower than we had in 2010” . Second, reduction of excise duties on fuel and gas. “We know that especially lately the gas bills coming to the apartment buildings are two or three times higher,” he said. Third, interference in PPC’s pricing policy “and the government not subsidizing the super profits of individuals in the energy market”. He accused her of “choosing in the midst of an energy crisis for the State to lose an additional percentage of PPC”. He also stressed the need “to settle the private debt born of the pandemic, especially for the self-employed and small and medium-sized enterprises.”

Regarding the pandemic, Mr. Iliopoulos commented, speaking tonight on Action24, that “the enemy of the common effort is complacency” and that “the ease with which we hear lately from government officials phrases such as’ we are in the last month of pandemic ‘, recalls the ease with which we heard in ’21 that we are in the last mile “,” a last mile that left behind 15,952 losses. It brought Greece twice above the EU average in losses per million inhabitants “.

At the same time, he described as “unthinkable” that the government did not provide special purpose permits for working parents of sick children, noting that on Monday and Tuesday alone, 25,000 cases were found in students. He said that, until now, the parents of these children go to work normally, with many of them even taking public transport. “That’s why we say the government is enforcing herd immunity,” he said. He asked two questions: “why is the government – as it sounds – considering giving special purpose permits for the public sector only and not for the private sector and secondly, with 25,000 cases in schools in two days they are still thinking whether to give special purpose permits? “.

He added that “there is a need for substantial strengthening of the NSS, a brave implementation of telework in the public and private sectors to decongest MMMs and mass workplaces, but also real involvement of the private sector in health, in the fight against the pandemic.”

Regarding the vaccination, he commented, among other things, that while an increase in cases is also expected in children, the Penteli Children’s Hospital is suspending its full operation, in order to function mainly as a vaccination center. He stressed that our country should follow the example of vaccination of Portugal, “this means real operation of mobile vaccination units, support of primary care, mobilization of the community and local government”.
