N. Kerameos: Schools will open with the mildest possible measures

“Final decisions have not been made yet, we are discussing with the experts, but in general the tendency is to open with the mildest possible measures,” said the Minister of Education, Niki Kerameos, speaking this morning on OPEN TV about how the schools will open this year, explaining at the same time that “we are in continuous cooperation with the Ministry of Health, with Mr. Pleuris, with the groups of experts, with the doctors, with the EODY” but also that “you see that in general we are in a phase of coexistence with the pandemic”.

When asked if the protocols with masks and free self-tests will apply again this year, Mrs. Kerameos replied that we have moved away from the logic of systematic control because this is no longer effective, as “a huge part of the population has been vaccinated or sick”. However, “in the coming days we will finalize the protocols, always in collaboration with the experts.”

In the event that a case is detected in a school department, “There are measures for if someone gets sick,” said Ms. Kerameos and explained that “If someone gets sick, there is isolation for five days and then you can leave the house with a mask. This applies at the moment. This will apply anyway, unless the experts tell us otherwise. If someone gets sick, of course they will stay at home. There is a protocol regarding the measures,” he added.

The Minister of Education also noted that schools will open on Monday, September 12 “with the best possible staffing situation in recent years”, as she said with the new 8,500 thousand teacher appointments that will bring the number of appointments during her tenure to 25,000, ” we are constantly strengthening the human resources of education”. Nevertheless, there is an answer for any gaps that are presented since “in addition to the hiring of permanent teachers, 32,000 substitutes were hired the day before yesterday. We have the best possible staffing,” added Mrs. Kerameos.

The minister of education also referred to the innovations of this year’s new year, with the all-day school where in 50% of the country’s departments will end at 5.30 p.m., with the school groups, the mentors for the new teachers, the kindergartens in which the children will now go from the age of 4 and not at the age of 5, the evaluation that is done at three levels, the new textbooks. “All these changes that were launched at the beginning of our term are being implemented,” he said. He also referred to the Public IEK, which will operate this year and in which, as he said, one can get the certification after two years and enter the labor market dynamically.
