N. Panagiotopoulos for the upgrade and modernization of the armored M113A1/A2 TOMP

Responding to a question tabled in the Parliament by the president of the Hellenic Solution Kyriakos Velopoulos (20-06-2022) on the subject of “Upgrading and modernization of the M113A1/A2 TOMP vehicles (Armoured Personnel Carrier)”, the Minister of National Defense Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos announced the following:

– The Army General Staff (AGS), with a view to increasing the operational capabilities and increasing the survivability of the means, implements targeted conversions and reconstructions of these in the military factories, according to the Program for the Reconstruction of Main Materials & Weapon Systems and

– In the context of the procedures provided for by the current legislation, monitors and evaluates proposals for upgrading the vehicles in question from various companies, with the aim of extending the time the vehicles in question remain in active service.

Finally, he reiterated that “the GES has planned the increase of the operational capabilities of the Infantry, based on the recorded operational requirements, and any solution that serves the said planning, is examined and evaluated thoroughly, taking into account the operational and economic conditions”.

Answer to a question on “Turkey targets rocky islands in the Aegean”

“The Armed Forces (AF) in accordance with the National Military Strategy (NMSS) carry out all the necessary security and surveillance actions of the land, sea and air space of the territory, contributing to the timely and effective response to any form of threat against national interests. as part of their mission, the EDs are in constant readiness, possess the necessary organization, while they have and adjust the operational plan to ensure the National Defense of the homeland, against any threat, utilizing all the personnel and available means”.

This was announced by the Minister of National Defense, Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos, in response to a question submitted to the Parliament (27-06-2022) by Hellenic Solution MP Antonios Mylonakis, on the topic “Turkey is targeting rocky islands in the Aegean”.

According to the question, “since the beginning of the year, Ankara has planned continuous naval and air violations on the rocky islands of Octopus and Melabioi or Melantioi, between Ikaria and Mykonos, at coordinates 37.41N 25.57E, i.e. about 30 km east of the middle of the Aegean (25th meridian).At the same time and at regular intervals, Turkish UAV’s, F-16’s and electronic warfare aircraft fly over these rocky islets, which are about 28 km from the Turkish coast and within range of Turkish ground weapon systems -territory”.

However, Mr. Panagiotopoulos observed “the more specific actions that the ED will take, cannot be communicated through the present procedure, due to the classification of “CONFIDENTIAL” and above, which they carry”.
