N. Papathanasis: The reduction of VAT may not reach consumers

“People are anxious and justifiably anxious,” Nikos Papathanasis told ANT1 and the show “Morning Press” about the energy crisis and the wave of price increases in the market.

As the Deputy Minister of Development and Investment added, the government from the very beginning launched measures to support households and businesses, as it did with 43 billion euros during the coronavirus period and now with the energy crisis, it strengthens the citizens with 4 billion euros.

“There is an asymmetric factor in when this case will end. We will continue to support, because we know that our fellow citizens need it,” said Mr Papathanasis, acknowledging that “measures are certainly not enough. No government can cover “That’s why we support vulnerable groups in a targeted way.”

Asked about the possibility of reducing VAT on basic goods, he said that “a horizontal reduction in VAT does not mean that those who really need it will be supported. With targeted measures, we support the most vulnerable households, low-income retirees and those who really need it”, adding that “all measures are on the table and evaluated, but what we aim at is the support of fellow citizens in need” and that “a reduction in VAT may not reach the final consumer”.

“Every day there are inspections and fines are imposed for profiteering. We will be ruthless in the area of profiteering. Those who will think of profiteering, should know that we will be everywhere, with inspections throughout the country,” said Nikos Papathanasis.

Regarding reports of product shortages in the market, the Deputy Minister of Development and Investment said that “citizens do not need to stockpile products, there were not and will not be shortages in the market, consumers must buy what they usually bought and what they need”.

“The Easter table will be really more expensive, inflation has reached 8% in Greece, which is why we support the most vulnerable households”, said Mr. Papathanasis, noting that “we are holding forces because we do not know the depth of the crisis, “We will continue to support the people.”
