Nadia Comaneci: The girl who achieved the perfect 10 in gymnastics and set new challenges, looks amazing at 59

Nadia Comăneci made history at the 1976 Olympics by winning the first grade of 10 for her incomparable performance on the uneven bars. His achievement was such that the electronic board was unable to display 10, as it was considered an unattainable rating.

The Romanian gymnast added another six perfect 10 ratings in different categories within her performance, becoming the favorite athlete of the Montreal Olympics, with the media betting it all by calling her the new legend to overcome.

Over the next several decades, movies and books were made telling the story of Comăneci, including a bit about the elite world of gymnastics, her defection from Romania just a month before the collapse of communism in 1989, and what led her to escape.

From the age of 13, Comăneci began to be spied on by the Romanian government, with infiltrated spies such as gymnasts and trainers, wiretaps and correspondence intercepted to ensure that she never left the country.

In addition, their workouts were tough, led by the controversial Béla Károlyi and his wife Marta, who later fled to the United States in 1981 to successfully coach the national gymnastics team and found one of the most important schools in the country.

For these reasons, in a single last night, the priest Ghita Talpos took six people on a six-hour journey to reach the Romanian border with Hungary. Talpos knew that Comăneci was part of that group until the moment he saw her, as his escape had been planned only days before.

Comăneci came to Oklahoma in 1991 and, together with Olympic medalist Bart Conner, ran a gymnastics school. After three years, they both returned to Romania, when communism had been defeated in the country, to marry and be received as a national heroine.

Although it has been more than four decades since he made history, Comăneci is still considered a legend, having achieved the perfect 10 at just 14 years old. Today, and at 59 years old, the former Romanian gymnast looks better than ever.

A few weeks ago it was 45 years since his presentation became synonymous with perfection, so Comăneci decided to remember the greatest success in his career with a nostalgic message on social networks.

Almost half a century has passed, which is hard to believe. It doesn’t feel like it’s been that long, it doesn’t seem like it’s been 45 years. The more the years go by, the more I appreciate what I have accomplished. I would have had a very different life if I hadn’t accomplished this. So I am grateful for everything, for everything that has happened.
