Nagorno-Karabakh: Armenia announces peace talks with Azerbaijan

THE Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to hold peace talks to de-escalate the dispute between them over the enclave of Nagorno-Karabakhannounced the services of the Armenian Prime Minister Nicole Pasinian.

The press release was made public after his talks Mr. Pasinian with Azeros president, the Ilam Aliyevat Brussels. The two men also agreed to set up a bilateral border demarcation committee, according to the press release.

The Armenian Prime Minister and the Azeri President “Instructed Foreign Ministers” of the two states “Start preparations for peace talks between the two countries”, according to the announcement distributed to the press in Yerevan. Also present at the meeting of the two leaders was the President of the European Council, Charles Michel.

Both Russia and the United States have expressed concern about the new escalation of tensions in the enclave.

In 2020, the Azerbaijani army ousted Armenian forces from vast areas they had controlled since 1990 in and around the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave, before a Russian-mediated ceasefire was agreed.

Armenia said last month that it expects Moscow to take action to get Azerbaijan to withdraw troops from Nagorno-Karabakh’s areas monitored by a Russian peacekeeping force. Azerbaijan claims that these areas are part of its territory.

According to the announcement made public by Mr. Pasinian’s office, the “Bilateral Committee on Border Demarcation” of Armenia and Azerbaijan will also undertake to handle “Issues” pending for guarantees “For security and stability”but no further details have been released.
