Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict: Major Cities Under Attack

The second largest city in Azerbaijan, Ganja, has been attacked in the course of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. The Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense speaks of a shelling by Armenian forces. Civilians are also believed to have been killed in the attacks.

Military bases also Affected?

The authorities of the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic announced that their forces had destroyed a military airport in Ganja. Azerbaijan vehemently denied this.

Capital Stephanakert Target of Attacks

Houses and buildings burned again in the capital of Nagorno-Karabakh, in Stepanakert. The Armenian authorities blamed the Azerbaijani army for targeted attacks on Stepanakert.

Over 220 people have been killed in the armed conflict in the past few days. In Nagorno-Karabakh, the majority of the population consists of Armenians. The region split from Azerbaijan in 1991 after a four-year war between the former Soviet republics. The violent conflict since the beginning of this week is the most devastating since the unstable ceasefire began nearly 30 years ago.

The Armenian side has been accusing Turkey for days of sending Islamist mercenaries from northern Syria into the conflict. These are said to have been recruited to implement Sharia law in the disputed area.
