Washington has criticized China and Russia for promoting a conspiracy theory that the US military maintains biological laboratories in Ukraine, escalating controversy over attempts to mislead the public about the war in Europe, according to Bloomberg.
“We note Russia’s false allegations about alleged US biological weapons laboratories and the development of chemical weapons in Ukraine,” White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement on Thursday. “We have also seen Chinese officials echo these conspiracy theories.”
She described the allegations as “absurd” and “the kind of misinformation we have seen repeatedly by the Russians over the years”. Psaki also expressed concern that Russia could use chemical weapons in Ukraine.
Earlier this week, China accused the US military of providing “dangerous” biological laboratories in Ukraine without evidence, a claim that has since been widely circulated in the country’s state media.
The comments reflected the distraction tactics previously used by Chinese diplomats when asked about the origins of Covid-19, and again referred to Fort Detrick in the US state of Maryland, which the Soviet Union falsely claimed in the 1980s that caused by AIDS.
Britain’s defense ministry said Moscow’s claims that Kyiv was working on biological or nuclear weapons “may be reinforced as part of a retrospective justification” for the invasion.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian reacted to Psaki’s comments Thursday in a regular press conference in Beijing. “It is a pious desire to dispel concerns in a few words and irresponsible to call the concerns of the world misinformation,” he said.
