Nancy Pelosi, former Speaker of the United States House, said on Wednesday (10) that it is up to President Joe Biden “to decide whether he will run” in the presidential election after a poor performance in the Debate in CNN.
It is the second time in as many weeks that Pelosi has indicated that the effort by some in the party to replace Biden is not over.
The new comments also come after the president emphatically announced earlier this week that he will remain in the race, despite growing concerns among congressional Democrats that he could hurt the party in down-ballot races this year.
“We are all encouraging him to make that decision because time is running out,” Pelosi said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” suggesting the question of whether Biden will be the party’s nominee is open.
“I want him to do whatever he decides to do and that’s the way it is,” he added.
Nancy Pelosi also said that Biden has “the overwhelming support of the convention” and “he is loved, respected and people want him to make this decision.”
Speaking directly to her fellow elected Democrats, she implored: “Let’s wait, whatever you’re thinking, or tell someone privately, but you don’t have to put this on the table until we see what happens this week.”
After her morning briefing, Pelosi’s spokesman said: “Speaker Pelosi fully supports whatever President Biden decides to do. We must turn our attention to why this race is so important: Donald Trump would be a disaster for our country and our democracy.”
