US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced on Thursday that she will not seek re-election as the Democratic Party leader.
The announcement comes after Republicans won a majority of lawmakers in the House with the 2022 midterm elections.
In a speech on the floor, Pelosi praised the party’s legislative achievements under her leadership before saying, “We must now move boldly into the future. The time has come for a new generation to lead the Democratic caucus.”
She also noted that she will continue to “speak for the people of San Francisco” as a congresswoman, but will not seek re-election to a leadership role.
Pelosi revealed that when she first visited the capital as a child, she never imagined she would go “from housewife to mayor.”
The Democrat also thanked her husband Paul for being a “pillar of support”, noting that she was grateful for all the well wishes they received for his continued recovery after a brutal attack.
