Nancy Pelosi’s Husband’s Attacker Wanted To Take Her Hostage, Prosecutors Say

The man accused of beating the husband of Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, with a hammer after forcing his way into the couple’s home, has threatened to take her hostage and break “her knees” if she lied under him. his interrogation, according to a federal criminal complaint filed Monday.

David Wayne DePape’s alleged intentions emerged when federal prosecutors charged the 42-year-old suspect with assault and attempted kidnapping in Friday’s break-in at the Pelosi family’s San Francisco home.

Several state charges were filed separately in San Francisco Superior Court, including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, theft, elder abuse and threatening a public official, the district attorney announced at a news conference.

The 82-year-old Speaker of the US House of Representatives, a Democratic politician second in line to the US presidency, was in Washington at the time of the attack. Her husband, Paul Pelosi, 82, was hospitalized while recovering from fractured skulls and injuries to his hands and right arm.

Doctors expect a full recovery, Pelosi’s office said.

DePape was arrested by officers sent to the home after Paul Pelosi made an emergency 911 call reporting the presence of an intruder, according to an FBI statement filed as part of the complaint.

Paul Pelosi, who was initially unconscious from the attack, later told police he was sleeping when a stranger, armed with a hammer, entered the room and demanded to speak to his wife, the complaint states.

The suspect told police in an interrogation following his arrest that he planned to hold Nancy Pelosi hostage for questioning, and that if she told the “truth” he would let her go, but if she “lied” he would break “her kneecaps” in the testimony to the FBI.

The incident has stoked fears about political violence ahead of midterm elections on Nov. 8, which will decide control of the House of Representatives and Senate during one of the most caustic and polarized US campaigns in decades.
