NASA calls on the US government for greater participation in the study of UFOs

A NASA panel made up of independent experts released a report, this Thursday (14), in which it called on the US government for a greater role for the space agency in the study of “unidentified aerial phenomena” (UAPs, its acronym in English). ).

NASA director Bill Nelson, during a statement made this Thursday morning, reported that the study showed that the agency can use data, artificial intelligence and machine learning to investigate UFOs and make all information public to combat the sensationalism surrounding the issue.

The agency, in a statement accompanying the report, said it is evaluating the independent study team’s findings and recommendations, but nonetheless created a new role: director of UFO research.

The NASA panel, made up of experts in scientific fields ranging from physics to astrobiology, released the report after holding its first public meeting in June.

UAPs are better known to the public as unidentified flying objects, or UFOs.

At the event, David Spergel, president of the independent team that produced the study commissioned by NASA, stated that the current approach to the UFO study, led by the United States Department of Defense, resulted in a sparse sampling of data, which compromises the analysis. .

“NASA has a variety of existing and planned Earth and space observation assets, along with an extensive archive of historical and current datasets, that should be directly leveraged to understand UFOs,” the report said.

“Although NASA’s fleet of Earth observation satellites typically lack the spatial resolution to detect relatively small objects such as UFOs, their state-of-the-art sensors can be used directly to probe the state of local Earth, ocean, and atmospheric conditions that are space-sensitive. and temporally coincident with the UAPs initially detected using other methods. Thus, NASA assets can play a vital role in directly determining whether specific environmental factors are associated with certain reported UAP behaviors or occurrences,” he added.

The U.S. government in recent years has made several releases of information it has gathered about UFOs, a subject that was once met with virtual official silence. The new report called UFOs “one of our planet’s greatest mysteries.”

“Observations of objects in our skies that cannot be identified as balloons, aircraft or known natural phenomena have been sighted around the world, but there are limited high-quality observations. The nature of science is to explore the unknown, and data is the language scientists use to uncover the secrets of our universe,” the report stated.

“Despite numerous reports and images, the absence of consistent, detailed and curated observations means that we currently do not have the body of data necessary to draw definitive scientific conclusions about UFOs,” he added.

The report included some UFO cases that previously came to light in the Pentagon’s release of a video by naval aviators showing enigmatic aircraft off the east and west coasts of the US exhibiting speed and maneuverability superior to known aviation technologies and lacking any visible means of propulsion or flight control surfaces.

The report said U.S. government defense and intelligence analysts did not have enough data to determine the nature of some of the objects.

NASA’s independent panel studying UAPs held its first public meeting in June, made up of experts in scientific fields ranging from physics to astrobiology. Challenges that panelists cited in their work included the stigma associated with the subject, as well as the dearth of scientifically reliable methods for documenting UFOs.

Two senior US defense intelligence officials told a 2022 congressional hearing that the Pentagon was committed to determining the origins of UFOs. Both officials promised that the Pentagon would follow the evidence wherever it leads and made clear that the main interest is in addressing potential threats to national security.

Both officials at that hearing chose their words carefully, including the question of possible extraterrestrial origins. One of the officers, Scott Bray, said during the hearing “we have no material, we have not detected any emanations within the UAP task force that would suggest it is anything of non-terrestrial origin.”
