On a new expedition to Mars, the Perseverance spacecraft, a rover from NASA (United States Space Agency), discovered a new rock that, because it has stripes on its surface, was nicknamed “zebra”.
The discovery was made during a new expedition by the spacecraft, which is seeking to find ancient rocks that can teach us about the history of Mars. According to a report published on NASA’s official website, the scientific team involved in the discovery believes that this rock has a texture unlike any other seen on the entire planet.
The reason for the rock’s unusual texture is still unknown to researchers, but initial interpretations suggest that metamorphic processes, or geological transformations, may have created its stripes. Scientists still hope to find more of this new type of rock.
The “zebra rock” was discovered “by chance” by researchers on September 13. The team reported that they spotted the strange-looking boulder from a distance and managed to capture an image of it with Navcam, a type of camera used on some spacecraft.
